Despite its merits, factors such as relatively high prices, variability in energy generation and visual clutter hinder the adoption of photovoltaic energy solutions. Solar photovoltaic technology also has issues with land requirement, especially in urban areas where land is a premium commodity, as well as its public perception because of its disruptive and imposing look. The Solar Tree aims to address these issues by eliminating the visual clutter often associated with photovoltaics, and mitigating the variability of energy captured at different times of the day by emulating the natural characteristics of trees - all while reducing the land area required to harness solar energy. The Solar Tree also aims to foster a desirable urban space that is accessible, safe, legible and inclusive by providing amenities such as lighting, seating, charging ports and WiFi to members of the public.
