In the UK half a billion petrochemical plant pots end up in landfill every year. These pots take around 5 lifetimes to bio-degrade, releasing harmful chemicals during their eventual breakdown. Every day in the UK, 100 million cups of tea are consumed: 98% are made with a tea bag which are often thrown into general waste; again, destined for landfill. The aim of the Tea-Pots project is to take this already imported waste material (tea bags) combined with sustainably sourced, biodegradable beeswax to create fully sustainable, durable and compostable plant pots. The chemicals within the beeswax allow the pots have a lifetime decided by the consumer, as breakdown will not occur until such a time as the pot is entered into a composting environment. The eventual aim of the project is to replace plastic plant pots altogether.
