Fej is the result of conversations between team-mates and competitors throughout the 2019 race season, discussing recent innovations within the sport of cycling and how the current rules could be pushed and bent in the pursuit of performance gains. Applying recent developments in approaches to cycling aerodynamics with the use of anthropometrics from 3D scans and CFD testing, a design process was created allowing for the rapid creation of designs for custom-fitted racing helmets that integrate into the rider’s body allowing for optimum performance against aerodynamic drag.Insights gathered during research found promising applications of machine learning in similar applications within aerospace, currently in the research stage. With proper development, an AI-based design process for helmets could produce better performing helmets for a wider range of users with fewer requirements for manual design work, refining the design process with each helmet.
