A third of all food produced is wasted, accounting for 8% of all global greenhouse emissions and nearly a trillion dollars in financial loss every year. The majority of food waste occurs in households and is mostly due to food not being eaten in time. Orbit will help to reduce food waste by prioritising and suggesting recipes that use ingredients close to expiration. The app is powered by an inventory that tracks the consumption of food in the home. A new data input method was identified as an improvement to the current user experience, where the service would detect a purchase from a retailer and extract the latest shop data to automatically populate the user’s inventory. The overall aim of this app is to improve food-based knowledge and the understanding of the financial and environmental cost of food waste.
